Anthony: Thats a great days catch for LL salmon..Pretty tough to do that on any body of water these days...Now that u mention the finger lakes probably as a good a place to try for salmon as any wheres on the east coast..I think the biggest ones on coming out of Lake Ontario, but even there they are few and far between..Sporty fish, but their numbers seem to be dwindling...

My buddy and I got our limit one day last year. I'm not gonna put to much info out on how we were getting them for the sake of keeping the lurkers in the dark lol, but these were 4 of about ten boated that day. I have had much success with these things with some days being better than others but have nevet got the skunk. Get out there and give them a try they are def. There to be caught and once you figure them out you will routinely catch them. We even lost one at the boat about 22-23 inches, she was a beaut. Tight line boys.

Catching Landlocked Sslmon is similar to trolling any deep water lake !
Pay attention to temps they prefer cool temps similar to other Salmon species.
My favorite way of taking them is trolling on darker days with some surface chop.
In spring u can troll near surface with a fly rod equipped with Teeny sink tip line , I prefer a #7 rod with a Teeny 250 / 300 sink tip !
Once a Thermo forms send a lead core line down to preferred temp range.
Fly outfit u can troll smelt imitating streamers while led outfit spoons will get their attention ! Slightly faster troll speeds r preferred , once u zero in like was mentioned not hard to get hits !

i fished lake Ontario on a regular basis from 1987 to 2009, and i think i only got 1 or 2 in all that time.

do a search on kokanee and you will see many youtube vids and trolling gear that are targeted at these fish. I used to fish aeroflex alot years ago and Ive never caught one, even when targeting them. They are easier to catch this time of the year than in summer. aeroflex has a good herring population, and the place is a bowl 95% of the time, 20ft off shore you are in 20-30fow, so search for schools of herring and pay attention to their depths. thats where i would be targeting my gear, and also running some lines up high around 15-20ft down. just be careful trolling there, its basically 3 large bowls, the center bowl is around 100ft deep, but if your not careful w ur chartplotting you will troll right into the humps that divide the bowls and snag your gear. I would focus on the first 2 bowls, thats where most the trout Ive gotten were at, summer months u can jig them right on the bottom or night fish them like at RV. side imaging really helps on finding the bait balls without searching hard and if you have good marks you can even jig them up. I dont think the ramp dock is in anymore there, you will need knee boots to probably launch and retreive your boat, good luck. fyi they also had 600ish trout popped in on fall stocking, not much pressure up there after summer, should be at least a few trout to be had

I ran a charter business up there for 15+ seasons & never caught LL Salmon , sure u didn't get Atlantics ?? They were stocking those for awhile, not sure if they still do ?

They are all the same fish. Salmo Salar.. They will get bigger in Lake Ontario, more like a sea run fish [25+ lbs], but they are sourced the same as the inland lakes throughout NY.. They have not done well in LO.. They get big, but most disappear after stocking.. I don't think they can compete with the pacifics, rainbows, browns, etc.. Can't say why but they seem pretty fragile in the big lake

.. Lots of them in Cayuga Lake and easy to catch as long as you have time... They hit all winter, spring and late fall as well, and can be caught by spinning from shore , but the lake is 40 mile long, 2 miles wide, and 435 feet deep, with tons of bait, so its rarely blitz fishing.. In summer thay go down to about 25-50 feet, and trollers catch a lot of them on downriggers.. However, the small ones are the most aggressive, and thousands die on downrigger lines every year dragging them with a moving boat into warm water from the thermocline.. I usually catch a few a year blind casting here and there, I am not a troller, but that IS the best way to catch them.. If you don't mind using a 10 pound rigger ball, and heavy trolling gear to catch 2 pound LL salmon... bob

The guide I use on the oswego river catches a few each season. However he hates them, rarely large enough to keep but mostly all die upon release due to the exhaustion from reeling them in. Almost a waste of a fish. There is also a club that stocks northern ny rivers ( fish creek east and west branch, mad river). They have limited success.

Chrisper: think most of replies ur getting here probably not helping you with your own choice of Lakes here in NJ...Aeroflex and Waywayanda both nice lakes to fish..LL Salmon can be caught in both..Her's tip that took lots of trout for me in Waywayanda over the years...Try driftin live bait perferably herring over the deeper portions of the lake..Long line drift and slow row trolling in spring can be deadly, you'll probably catch more trout there than salmon.But believe me that works..warm water have to drop ur bait down to cooler temps..Thermonmeter and depth finder really helps...BTW caught lots of Landlocks in Schroon Lake NY doing the same thing, with shinners, But here in Jersey stick with herring best Live Bait I've found to use here. Not a bad idea to slow troll streamers, small spoons and spinners along with #7 rapalas..
