![]() The most exciting trout fishery in my opinion was the failed Donaldson bow experiment . There was a couple of years in early sixties that a winter run would occur . Not huge fish but many in. 15 to 18" class.
Once this went away the trout fishery barely existed & warm water fishery took over to this day. I believe several of state pike records came out of their in the early years . Good bass fishing for awhile as well , but never a trout go to spot for me ! Once RV filled this became the trout fishery for many. In those days GL & LH were also decent big trout producers . |

![]() Andy nothing to do with Spruce Run per se , just a lot to do with selling licenses!
Access is primarily boat type fishery where many fisherman will not fish from shore. So to get the biggest bang for the license dollar a smaller body of marginal water gets the fish ! It's hurts me as well since I love to pursue streamwise outsize trout! Covered many miles this spring to get two over. 5#'s , one NJ & one PA my home waters.ii |

![]() They stock channel cats, pike, and wipers in Spruce Run. Those fish are better suited for that water. Back when they stocked 1,200 trout in that lake, it still wasn't a great trout fishery.
BTW, nice fish.

![]() I havent spent alot of time on SR, just been there once in July, but the thermocline in the reservoir was NUTS, I have never seen anything like it anywhere else. between 8-10 feet down was was the heaviest band I ever saw on my sonar. Below that just nothing, empty water with no O2 for the feesh, IDK how the trout would holdover, Im sure theres a few spots w some springs they can hang onto, but how would they get food down there in the form of shiners/herring? Id guess they could eat the crustations on the bottom like others do but how many can hold over?
