I agree 100% capt. However, that IS the way our country is headed. It IS what the American people want, and it is what they voted for.
We get the government we deserve. Americans by and large want a nanny state, and want the government to tell us what we are allowed to do, what we can eat, and how much soda we can drink.. If it weren't true, we wouldn't have
the environmentalists and "tree huggers" running the show.. yet here we are.
We the people asked for the government we have. We demanded it with our votes, I am VERY sorry to say... bob

Not sure what the penalties for the commercial guys are, but I do know that they can and probably will seize the boat. Here in the SW Fla. area the poachers cry and scream when FWC sees them out in a boat dragging a net, the FWC waits until the poachers have the boat on the trailer and hooked to the truck, this way they can confiscate them all!! Poachers say that is unfair and that they should have busted them in the water, and only taken the boat and gear!! Happens all the time. I do remember the fine can be and often is $200.. per fish!!!!! Just touching a crab trap that is not yours is an outright FELONY!!!

It used to be common practice for ignorant dumb asses to dump old motor oil down storm drains. Until the stupid tree hungers got in the way and suggested a better way to dispose of hazardous chemicals. These are the same idiots who are trying to tell new construction to contain storm runoff so it doesn't pollute our tributaries. Where stripers need fresh water to reproduce. If you do your homework it's amazing what one might learn.

No, the people in question (tree huggers) are the ones who claimed that there were less than 10,000 female dogfish left in the ocean. The Tree Huggers in question are the ones who claimed that even though there were more Fluke in the ocean than ever recorded in 40 years that it was good to have the smallest quota in history anyway. The tree huggers in question are the ones who fought against us trying to hire a scientist to look into the SUmmer Flounder issue, fought us at every turn and then when we were proved right and they were proved wrong turned around and tried to take credit for the restored Fluke stock. The tree huggers in question are the ones who told us it would be better to kill the fishing businesses now and rebuild a stock quickly instead of rebuilding the stock slower and save both the fish and the fishermen at the same time. (read the meeting minutes, it is on the public record)

I believe those are the people being referred to as "tree huggers."

Now, back to the geniuses who stop and fish in a closed area with VMS on their boat

Great post. I bet the next thing all those nanny loving tree huggers will start crying about is wanting to restrict some of the hard working commercial fisherman that are helping to feed this fine country. I bet those "tree huggers" will even go as far as trying to tell those hard working tax paying commercial fish pot fisherman were they can and cannot set their gear. One more giant over reach by big government if you ask me. Let those hard working guys do what they have done for years and don't interfere with their livelihood . It will be sad day in deed if those "tree huggers" ever do get the pots off the reef. There go's just one more freedom.

cant a person act in contradiction to his stated beliefs without recourse anymore?

Guess not!

I get it now! Finally I get it.

Next time lets all vote for a government that will stay out of regulating fishing altogether, the ones who will not listen to those tree hugers, the ones who want less federal involvement.

The Wild West I say! Let commercial guys put their traps everywhere, cover every inch of the reef. Let them place some gill nets right across the front of every inlet, let them stay out of it. Who in their right mind would want what we have now, regulators making laws, limiting catch sizes, closing areas.

Shoot, while we're at it, why not publicise to the world how we will no longer lead on rebuilding stocks, we will join the hundreds of other countries in getting all we can.

We would be so much better off without this government as they don't understand the scope of this resource. It is business, it is livelihoods, all they do is try to mess it all up. No more selling our recreational catches, no more filing the boat with 14" fluke, no more cleaning out a school of bass. Who are these idiots who wanted a government that does what they do?
