ps got to fish a privite lake last night in wayne nj Pacakanack lake caught 9 channel cats biggest was pushing 12lbs on my scale other were all about 7bs, with tons of pesky bullheads to keep me busy also

I prefer to use a light setup. I have two ultra lite ugly sticks and have 4lbs mono. I typically like to use chicken livers, a dough mixture, and bluegills. I also fish a crazy setup. Think of a three way setup, with three small treble hooks attached with each type of bait on there. Been doing this for years, very successful

So, most of the streams and lakes in north jersey will have bullheads in them at least... but where are some good waters up here for channel cats other than Hopatcong (too busy for my liking) and the Delaware (too far)? I limited out on them once ice fishing at Mt. Hope Pond, but that seems to have been a fluke and I haven't caught any there since. Not trying to get anyone to burn any spots or anything, just looking to hook into some bigger fish.

Are they only active at night? Or is that just a better time because most other fish are less active?

Catfish have sensitve eyes. But an overcast day is good conditions, you can catch them during the day but night is more productive.....and have never done well in the morning...I usually like to start fishin about an hour before sunset and if I'm not into them heavy by 10 or so I generally call it a night...as far as spots, I'm not from north jersey but any deep slow hole, especially on a bend in the river with under cut banks, or fallen trees, next to cement walls, rock walls, near bridges or where a pipe crosses the underwater. I like to fish canals and rivers myself...and I do not target bullheads just channels. If you use a stink bait you generally will only catch channels.....good luck

Went cat fishing today in a private pond at my in laws 55 and over community.
Caught 10 in 30 minutes. Worms or Gulp minnows, either one worked well.
Pix is probably the average size buy I did catch a couple I'd guess 8-9 lbs.
All fish caught on 4lb. test on my Trout rod with a #2 hook in the middle of the day with bright sun. All released to fight another day.
Also caught 2 dinker LMB.
