Rockaway river 9/22/24:
They were at it again !!
DENVILLE - On Sunday afternoon, Sept. 22, a small group of 7 members of NJ Clean River Crew took time to clean debris from the Rockaway River in Denville, upstream of Savage Rd. They removed 132 tires, a chair, a safe and an assortment of garbage. This was not their first occasion in Denville. They have been here 3 other times in the last month. In total they removed 281 tires from the Denville section of the Rockaway River. They are all members of 4 Environmental groups that live outside of Denville: |

Now look at all the environmental groups in New Jersey asking for "donations" so they can LOOK at things like climate change. |

Re: Rockaway river 9/22/24:
When I was a kid living in Lyndhurst, back in the 60's, Denville,Rockaway,Dover , was "the country".. Lots of farms, woods and open grass land... I guess not so much these days,,,What is it with NJ residents and throwing tires in trout steams anyway?... I don't get it....

Re: Rockaway river 9/22/24:
Most of these tires are between 30 to 40 years old. Back then no one really thought much of disposing garbage in rivers. Then the Clean Water Act was initiated after the Ohio river caught on fire.

Re: Rockaway river 9/22/24:
After the Clean Water Act was enacted, I caught a tagged American shad in the Delaware River and the fisheries biologist didn’t believe me. I had to mail the tag to him. At that time it was believed that all of the shad in the river died after spawning because they couldn’t survive the low oxygen level in Camden on their attempted return to the ocean. A repeat spawner a year later was unheard of.

The probable sources of the tires in that section of the Rockaway are there was a junk yard in Dover adjacent to the river that flooded frequently as well as a heavy equipment contractor in Rockaway whose repair yard is also in the flood plain.
