Re: 3 ice fishing die on Lake Champlain:
That is very sad.....Can you imagine their loved ones waiting for them to return home, wondering why they are so late?... awful.
Its been a very warm winter for the most part across NY state.. Even some small ponds are totally ice free as I write this.
I went through the ice many years ago, when I was about 11 or 12. I was alone, not a soul around. Luckily, water in that spot was only up to around my waist, and I got out ok. If it was over my head I was finished, no chance I could ever get out.
That moment was not lost on me however, and I never again ventured on to the ice. I do not and will not ice fish. Never have.
This sort of thing happens a lot up here, we see these terrible stories every year due to the huge lakes up here that freeze unevenly, they have currents, warm upwellings, and sometimes just a change in wind direction will cause ice to break up in large areas... Its just not worth the risk in my opinion... bob
