PSA -- ALWAYS spud your way around!
The pics below demonstrate why you need to always always always spud your way around until you identify a safe area to fish.
Throughout the day over 100 swans, geese and ducks were in this hole. The surrounding ice was 5"! So when this hole eventually ices over it will be significantly thinner than the surrounding ice. Be safe out there guys!

yes the perch were biting good just in front of that swan swimming pool the birds kept that open even in the cold weather.. I was fishing about 10 yards in front of that area.. they had the spot that i wanted to fish open. you should always use a spud to check the ice as you go this time of the season. it was good to see you guys out there that day. i ended up with 17 perch and then called it to go home to catch the playoff games.
