Nice to hear of a laker. In my experience, they come in close to shore when it gets really cold, low 20's or colder, but I don't know why that seems to be the case. It's not like the water gets dramatically colder without freezing. Once the surface gets down below 39.2, its warmer at the bottom. We had a week just before the reservoir froze when we had lakers on each day, and each of those days was in the 20's or colder. Other examples I could cite, too, but especially that week.
