5-9 Raritan River Fishing
Started fishing late morning into the early afternoon today at Head Gates on the far side in the deep water. I had a nice sized small mouth on that I lost on my net attempt. Must say I was pretty let down as it was a nice sized Bronze Back....
So I continued fishing the deep waters with a lure nothing small was gonna take a swipe at. 25-30 minutes later I got nailed! This fish was a bit larger then the first. Great fight on the light weight, and even better when she started taking drag. I was able to get her close enough to make another net attempt & was able to get her this time. Much to my surprise it was a nice sized Large Mouth! (pictured below) I fished for maybe another hour without moving had one double follow in of a species I was unable to identify as they were moving so fast & that was all she wrote. |

Re: 5-9 Raritan River Fishing
I was wading the shallows in Manville last summer and saw quite a few baby Largemouth. Those fast swipe fish may be trout, them seem to get wise fast in that river. Nice LMB by the way !

Re: 5-9 Raritan River Fishing
Absolutely could have been trout. If they were, they surely weren't stocked this spring. The fish that followed me in were very nice size. Hoping to get back in that deep water a bit earlier tomorrow . there are some big fish lurking in those deeps below that dam. Hoping to get something special before the water starts to heat up.

Nice catch.
I catch a lot of small ones when catching killies. In the brackish too. |
