I've never kept anything caught at RV. Have you seen that water? It's filthy!

Kidding. But I rarely keep fish. I only keep stockie trout in rivers where they aren't likely to make it through the summer. In places like RV and rivers where they hold over I always let fish go.

I've fished RV religious since 2002 and kept less than 5 fish. But I know what you're getting at.

I think they kind of want you to keep the lakers.

I've heard the theory a lot. Harvesting the smaller lakers will allow the forage fish to repopulate and lead to bigger fish. But I'm just not convinced that it will work, particularly when so many rainbows are stocked. And I like catching 22" lakers. And I don't kill wild trout. And lakers taste like old shoes. So I'm tossing em back.

you can keep tossing them back if you want, that's up to you... but the slot limit does work

Why do you think that? The herring population hasn't recovered. Or am I wrong?

It is helping spread out the sizes of the lakers, which I think was the goal.

When they check the guts of RVR harvested fish, the rainbows are full of inverts and the lakers have more than their share of the forage fish, so I don't know that anything will be able to restore the herring now that the laker population is established... That ship has probably sailed.

Admittedly I haven't seen Shawn's presentation so I may be speaking out of turn but, if there are fewer smaller lakers then, by definition the population is more spread out. Unfortunately that doesn't mean that there are more big lakers. Just fewer smaller lakers.
