Default Round Valley newbie.

I'm looking to start fishing Round Valley from shore. I'm not looking for any spots or "secrets" but I want to buy some tackle and such. I've been a river trout angler for years so all my gear is geared toward such. The longest trout rod I have is a 7' UL loomis IMX spooled with 4lb mono so I'm thinking that will be fine. If not please let me know. What weight spinners are most effective. I have a feeling my 1/24 and 1/16 will be too light. Same with my little rapalas and yo zuri's. I'm assuming bait is going to be my best bet now. I've read slip sinkers with powerbait on the bottom and shiners on slip floats. Any info/help would be much appreciated.

I only fished RV with a boat, BUT let me tell you, on any given weekend, you can find at least 20+ people fishing from the shoreline, and catching plenty of fish. I'm sorry, I'm not much help to you, but trust me, this is a great board with a bunch of great guy's that are always willing to help another fisherman out. I will tell you this, if your targeting Lakers/ Browns, you have just as much a chance to catch fish then a guy on a boat. I have seen a lot of big Lakers caught from the shore. GOOD LUCK.

Hey Taco,

I'm in the same boat as you. Just started fishing RV this past December. From the times i've been there I can tell you this:

1. Your first trip should be on a sunny day and primarily to see the drop offs from the shore. (There are topographical maps but they are all about 20-25' inaccurate in depth right now) The majority of the shore has some nice drop offs but some are 10' from shore and some at 25' from shore.

2. From what i've been told by guys there fishing, forget about catching a brown.(Praying someone says otherwise... its been a while for a brown)

3. Everyone is using powerbait and fishfinder rigs. They work and I've caught a few on them but they are few and far between. I've done better with scented jigs and a rod that can cast far.

4. I can't remember why I was numbering this.

5. I've used medium, light and ultra light tackle and i've only ever caught anything on the ultra light tackle.(Alot of people told me I wasn't going to catch anything with heavier and so far they are right)

Basically, It's a BIG place to fish from shore and you can catch some nice trout everywhere. Like with rivers, I'm sure not everyone was letting me know too much but think of it as a big river. For lures, just get a couple that are a bit bigger than a river spinner maybe 1/8 or 1/4(1/4 red/silver phoebe got a nice 20" for me) The biggest thing to remember is that RV has its' own regulation for keeping size. It is a trophy lake. Check on http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/2017/trtregs17.pdf

I've been heading down every weekend and having a blast. Don't be afraid to experiment(Homemade Garlic infused curltail jigs) landed me a few 18"+ so far this year. Its a lake, they see a lot of bait. Pretty much everything works(within reason).

Have fun and go light!

Peep the yakuza videos on YouTube aka Philly extreme fishing or some sh*t. They'll give you all the info u need including how to film while wearing a chest mount for your GoPro and how to walk in mud up to your knee caps. Various other tidbits are usually highlighted throughout their feature films of awkward high fives and wobbly nighttime running across rocks and mud. Pretty epic.

Thanks for this! Nice to hear they are hitting jigs under floats. Powerbait in a rod holder isn't my idea of fishing.
