Default Tenacious canyon Report 7/16-Blue Marlin/Yellowfins.

Captains Rich Oris and Bernie Roth hosted Caleeb Oliver and friends from Pa. for our first canyon overnighter in the southern canyons Saturday. Just short of the Carteret two lines went down and when they crossed one another one line went limp and the charter reeled the other line in with a short Yellowfin which was released. We then trolled south to the Lindenkohl and hooked up an estimated 300-500 lb Blue Marlin which went deep and then came to the surface with one jump and cut the line in the process. Second Joe Shute lost. Shortly thereafter we hooked up a larger yellowfin and halfway to the boat the snapswivel holding the hook bait to the spreader bar broke. We had two more bites in that area where we landed our first yellowfin for the box and then lost a rainbow spreader bar after a screaming hookup that snapped the leader at 250 feet. At this point I'm asking myself what is going on, four breakoffs and I fish. We proceeded to the Lindenkohl where we hooked up our second yellowfin for the box just before dark. The night chunk was uneventful altho we heard from one of the other two boats in the canyon that they landed a 125 lb Sword. We woke in the morning to see 20 boats in the area. The morning troll started of slow with a couple of short yellowfins followed by another yellowfin for the box. We then had another screaming reel go off and you guessed it, we lost the third Joe shute. Just before lines out we hooked up and landed our fourth yellowfin. Caleeb and his friends were first timers to the deep and thoroughly emjoyed the experience and rod bending although the fish won most of the battles.
