Default Striped bass wire line newbie? Penn 4/0 or Shimano TLD work?

Rods seem basic, but what about 4/0 Senator or Shimano TLD's for the wire? Would either work? I've read in the past about some corrosion issue with the wire and the reels? Anyone have good insight. I'd like to hear. Thank you.

TLD is an aluminum spool I believe... If you put wire on it it's going to corrode the spool. Salt water and 2 dissimilar metals is what causes corrosion. I think the Senator is chrome which isn't the best either but it's a much less expensive reel.... Most are using the Penn 113h or 114h since they have stainless spools that won't corrode with the wire and they are a good size for Striper fishing as well.

As far as the wire line, Monel is a better choice then stainless since its softer and will coil better on the reel.

Further, lots of guys who used to troll with wire have switched over to braided line and use a drail weight to get the lure down further in the water column. If you use braid you don't need to worry about a rod with special guides or stainless reel spool like you do with wire.

Shimano Torium can't be beat for wire. Carbide guides or rollers on the rods are a must. Wire is old school but it works! Many newer fishermen don't know how to use it. The knots are important to tie properly and many guys don't know how to do it. Mono to wire.........Albright! Marking the wire with colored plastic telephone ( really old school.....telephone wire?) is a long lost art too. Reels need substantial mono backing and should hold 150 - 300 feet of wire on top. TLD's for braid work but you don't need the pre- set drag. You can go for something less expensive.

If ur pulling rigs/spoons then I would opt for the 4/0 fast Senator, small profile barrel swivels can be used to connect wire to backing. I used a tight BARREL wrap on wire side with doublre wire thru swivel eye . Mark wire using 3 M colored lecrical tape starting, SOME USE TELEPHONE WIRE BOTH WORK FINE at 150'then every 50' to complte 300'. If area ur fishing the rocks then u can easily work 150' add drails when required to obtain more depth.
I always carried a exta spool of 150' rready TO GO & A 300' DITTO IN CASE U LOST WIRE pre marked.
Guides full carbide always worked best for me. Always use outrodders when trolling wire ,if ur in a small boat keeps them separated on turns. WhenHOOKED UP DO NOT STOP BOAT LOOSE WIRE WILL DROP AND SNAG KEEP GOING UNTIL U CLEAR OR IF SMALL FISH JUST KEEP POWERING AHEAD,SLOW DOWN BUT DONT STOP.

Yep- very important to keep the boat in gear while fighting a fish too. Not only for the reasons
Lou mentioned, but the stifness of the wire and the weight of the spool will give the fish the leverage they need to spit the hook if you don't keep the line tight.

No rod pumping while reeling either. Keep the boat in gear and the rod tip high and bent to keep constant and steady pressure on the fish.
