Default Spruce and Farrington Weekend

Friday Night - Spruce Run

Fished from 8pm till 4am

Convinced couple of my friends to go out for some night time fishing and off we went to Spruce.

Idea was to hit the pike a thon early as soon as it was good to go. But no pike was waiting for me. I heard them laughing at me but none wanted to do anything with my bait.

I guess that kind a night that it will be. We caught pretty much everything else. Smallmouth, largemouth, brids, yellow perch, white perch and catfish. Everything but the damn pike.

Had my waders so covered a lot of shore ground. That is until I tripped over a damn log in a water and went for a swim. To my surprise both camera and phone survived my ordeal but was forced to keep on fishing while wet and pissed off.

Herring was spawning everywhere but the feeding time came at about 12am. Never saw anything like that. Fish was all over the spot where we were, literally inches away from us. Place looked like it was boiling. Came to the point when it started to freak me out a bit since it felt like we were being attacked by pirannias or something. Was a sight to behold.

Saturday was suppose to meet up at Dundee but was a bit burned from being up for 25 hours so took it easy.

Sunday went to my nemesis Farrington looking for that elusive pike. Crappies, smallmouth, yellow perch were all hooked on regular basis.

Finally something far more dangerous grabbed my line and I heard it scream. Now we are talking I thought to myself only to pull out my shiner with his head missing. Sweet I thought. Only pike or pickerel or snapper can do that kind of damage and I was willing to find out what it was.

Answer came shortly. My other rod started to sing to me as well and this time I would not be denied. It was something heavy and making a run for it. Was already thinking how finally my dream of catching a pike would finally happen. A bit later that dream came crushing to the ground. Damn snapper. damn you to hell.

Ended up catching two of them. Ended up giving the big one to another fisherman who was fishing next to me for his pond and called it a day.

Overall great fishing days, great catches but still not what I was hoping for.

Fish on everyone and tight lines.

Pics are coming.

Andre

Talking Re: Spruce and Farrington Weekend

Sounds like you and your crew caught everything that swims! That Herring spawn is a sight to see. Fish busting everywhere. It's Mother Nature at her best. Sounds like a great weekend my friend. Turtle soup for all.

Interesting catch. That's actually not a Snapping Turtle, but one of the 'basking turtles'. It's hard to tell which one from that picture. Perhaps a Red-Eared Slider or a Northern Red-Bellied.

Andre, that colorful one is a Painted Turtle.
here's a wiki page about them:

Looks like a Yellow-bellied Slider. Their young are also sold in pet stores and then released into the wild.

I fish that spot on Farrington often too and it's lousy with turtles. Can't cast a shiner out there without a turtle taking a bite. There are some big snappers in there for sure. This is the third season I've fished there and it seems to get a little worse each year, but only in that spot, the rest of the lake isn't as bad. Still never seen a pike, by the way. Heard people say they've seen or caught one but nothing but largemouth, pickerel, crappie, yellow perch, and bullheads for me.

Rybaz,

Don't forget white cats, farrington got them as well.

But yes I am yet to get a pike out of Farrington. I only seen either pike or pickerel in the Bicentennial Park cove but never got a single pike out of there.

On the other hand my PB pickerel did come out from Farrington and topped at 27 inches. I thought I finally got that pike when I saw it at first.
