Default First try at fluke

Got tired quickly of the blues all over the place and have wanted to go fluking(my favorite fishing.) Was gonna go thursday but got called to work, didn't like the tides on friday so this morning was my first go... Fished the outgoing from 11:30 to 1:30. Fishing wasn't great by any means, I had a few bit tails and lost 2 shorts right 2 feet in front of me, and I caught 3 blues had a doubleheader on the teaser and bucktail actually.... The highlight was the 1 fluke I did land, which is obviously the first of the year at 19 inches. What was great about this fish was it hit 4 feet away from me and I actually seen it swallow my teaser. I've seen that before but never so clearly like today or with a keeper sized fish.

Last year the first fluke I caught was 19 inches aswell and 2014 was a great year, though that was early June, not mid May Hopefully that indicates 2015 will be even better.

All were caught on Gulp

Great report and our first of hopefully many here this summer.

Must have been pretty cool seeing that fish hit your teaser

What ounce bucktail do you guys from the surf normally use on a fairly calm day? And how do u successfully jig it ? I usually have a hard time feeling the bottom unless I use like a 4oz jig and its damn near impossible to get the sexy jigging motion I like.

Should I just screw the feeling, and just wait a few secs and assume it hit bottom before jigging? thanks for the tips

Hey Ralph, on that day there was 2 people I talked to a lot so right now it's not ringing a bell...... Did I wave to you as I was leaving? I was in a Jeep Wrangler.

Went back to my spot yesterday(5/19) and had nothing but searobins in 4 hours of fishing. Went out today(5/20) in a different spot where the wind would be on my back and not against me. Fished it for a short while and didn't like what I saw, made a move and fished the original spot for 2 hours and landed 2 keepers at 19 and 18.5 aswell as 2 shorts. No searobins today and landed a few blues aswell. All were safely released though New York is open now.
