Smile Captain Cal "Black Sea Bass Trivia"

Black sea bass grow slowly and can live up to 20 yrs. They are able to reproduce when they reach 1 to 3 years old. Black sea bass are "protogynous hermaphrodities"- most black sea bass start out as females and a percentage of them will become males. One theory is that when a large male is caught, he leaves behind a harem of smaller females. The loss of the resident male, triggers one of the females to morph into a male for spawning purposes..

" BLACK SEA BASS" Season opens Saturday Oct 18.

Join us for a fun day, "don't forget your cooler".... We leave at 7:30 am..

In addition to the Cal's great info, BSB are indeed grouper. They are really the only indigenous inshore grouper species we have in the NE. Some people think they are related to Blackfish and Bergals which is understandable, but that is false.
