Default Dec 28th Jamaica Star Sea Bass Trip

Hopped on the JStar with Ryan W to take advantage of the weather window. Our own RealNauti was subbing as a mate which means he has around 387 pictures. Fishing was a steady pick on sea bass, very few porgies and a few ling. Ryan and I both had a limit plus some smaller keepers ORL. My 20 were between 2 - 4 1/2lbs. I had 3 ling to go with that and Ryan had 3 porgies. A beginning couple next to us had around 30 sea bass between them but had a hell of a fun time doing it. Both pools were 6lb class sea bass.

I think anyone who fished hard and efficiently had a sea bass limit. We had a few relative novices that didn't get their limits. Biggest problem they had was fear of swinging a 3-4lb sea bass. They would call for the net, all three of their hooks would get tangled and it would be 5 minutes before they got back in the water. If you want to fill your cooler be efficient, swing them in, get them off the hook and in the cooler ASAP and get back down there quickly. I don't think Ryan and I were on the best real estate or had the best bites but our catches were near the top because we fished efficiently.

Great advice. More time in the water increases chances of putting together better catch. HAve all rigs pre tied and have second rod ready to go also helps.

I was on same trip with one other guy and we had same results. Think we were on opposite side of boat but we had our limit of bass or one shy and a few ling. all and all a good trip.

Glad you had a good trip too. Always hard to guess what happened on the other side of the boat on a full trip. I try to chat with some people from over there and guesstamate.

Thanks for the report.

I am surprised that the Porgies weren't there in any numbers. In some of the other reports I read it seemed you had to fight through the to get to the Sea Bass.

I am scheduled to go out Monday. Hopefully I will have something worthwhile to report.

I should be doing a Mon night trip. As for porgies, some wrecks are mixed and others are dominant for one species or the other. Sounds like some of the boats saw each other in the area the last few days. We seemed to be on our own away from that area, other than a mix of birds, dolphin, blues and at least one giant bluefin we saw moving between spots. I would have liked to fight some porgies, but I still had a 60lb limit of sea bass for the freezer, plus I had a ton of porgies on my first trip this year.
