This is great news - a President that is finally listening to us. He might be the best since FDR and I have to believe he is going to be pro active - developing strategies to increase stocks too.

How exactly can we increase fluke and flounder numbers? The obvious one is to stop targeting breeders. The other one has to be habitat renewal. Trawlers have dug up all the offshore eel grass and flattened lumps. There has to be a way to renew this stuff.

There's a lot happening right now!!

On the political side, the Modern Fishing Act which serves to give some flexibility in the Magnuson Steven laws that current govern our fisheries is in the Senate and needs to go to the house for approval.

On the science side, the SSFFF has managed to get the results of the Sex/Size study considered in the 2018 Fluke Stock Assessment.

There have also been some recent successes here locally. Last year NJ chose to not accept one of the regulation options for Fluke that were forced on us by the Feds. We fought it and the Secretary of Commerce allowed us to deviate from those options. First time this has ever happened...

Also here in NJ a lot of groups, organizations and fishermen are getting involved in Fisheries Management issues. Yes, it's a lot of work and seems like an uphill battle. Many have tired and thrown in the towel while others continue to get involved and slug it out.

At the end of the day it's apathy and the "nothing's going to change" attitude that has taken away our rights to the resource and thanks to the people who continue to fight, things are finally starting to turn our way.

Still plenty or work and more to get done so don't give up, get involved.

Want to to know something??. I was around during the "Oil Contaminated Water" years before any real environmental regulations... The fishing was WAY better, dirty water notwithstanding..
I think perhaps you may want to consider another political talking point, with all due respect..

Rec anglers and charter captains in the Gulf would go ballistic if someone decided to "clean up" the Gulf and remove the rigs... thats where the fish are.
There is a way in our high tech age to maintain clean water, and sensibly utilize the energy resources we have in abundance in the states.. Do you REALLY think this or any other president wants polluted water, dead fish, poison desolate land??.. All that stuff is radical leftist nonsense... bob

It is not about the right or the left. If DJT is willing to help us then that is great. It is a hell of a lot more than Obama did for us on the regulation front.
As for netters. They definitely loose gear and destroy some structure. I can`t blame them for the eelgrass though.... I always thought that was the result of jet ski`s tearing it up in skinny water. I could be wrong, but eelgrass is synonymous with back bays / tidal areas.
