Steve - your going to have a hell of a time working a bucktail on most party boat rental rods I've seen.... Tips are way too firm to produce the bouncing action you need and poles much too heavy to work jigging all day. Can it be done, I guess but you'd be much better off with your Shimano bait runner braid set up if you want to bucktail.

As I'm writing this I can see it now...... 12 year old beats out Steve for the pool with a whitsle fish jigged on a rental rod

how light would you go on the rod if youre using a 4oz bucktail? looks like some guys are going pretty light in pictures but im assuming theyre probably in the bays with lighter jigs

Sound advice so far... Don't have much else to add, just curious what boat you're heading on? Sounds like the Highlands?

The bucktailing done these days are pretty gear dependent. If you don't want to use braid, just drag bait with your rental rod. Bait is catching this year, often better than jig/gulp.

Steve 2oz and even 1.5oz will get you To the bottom with 30lb braid and 10ft mono 25#top shot dont bother with flouro too $$$ use mono fluke aint leader shy.

Jigs: bring the heavier ones just in case. on the bottom rig dont need buck tails cheaper alternative plain lead head bullet style, if fishing the sand use the bucktail jig if you want, but in the sticky stuff youll loose the jig or bucktai anyway.
jig color dont mean squat stay w/ white .
Fluke are after the gulp , on the jig use the 6inch GRUB GULP youll see how it slides up to the back of the bullet head jig and looks natural and has a barb on it the fluke cant pull it off . Colors white , nuclear chicken , pink shine lately chartreuse has not produced. On the top hook 7/0 BAITHOLDER hook and use the 6inch glow white swiming mullet, most of the strikes will come on the top hook with the 6inch mullet.
You can also try the 6inch grub on the top hook.

I fish a bucktail on the bottom with a big strip bait & stinger hook
10-18inches up from that depending on drift speed, slower drift higher the drop loop,i will tie a dropper loop & a 3/0- 5/0 baitholder & put a 4-6inch gulp swimming mullet or grub in glow, chartreuse or nuke chicken.
make sure you are fishing enough weight to not foul up errrryoooone around ya & good luck!
JMurr doesn't even go fluke fishing.
