Captain Dan is right that the solid split ring connection to hook and line is the strongest. My understanding for top hooks is that is prevents the jig leveraging out of this fish or making a large hole in the mouth. I will say that hook placement depends on the jig and species of fish. Assist hooks work well for pelagics and seabass but do not work on all species. I’ve had better success fishing a traditional jig with bottom hooks for striped bass and ground fish like pollock and cod since they typically hit the jig from the bottom.
