I had a similar project 4 years ago. After I got ALL the adhesive off and de-waxed, you could still see where the old name was. Then I went over it with 3M Imperial compound (a bit pricey) with a Makita polisher but the hull came out awesome.

Note: I cannot imagine doing this by hand. But using a heavy duty polisher requires that you pay very close attention to what you are doing and not push too hard or stay in one spot too long.

Then follow up with a good wax or polish.
