![]() Been reading on this site for a while now and just decided to finally join. I am heading back home for my college's winter break to essex county and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of where i could find some trout. Ive been getting into fly-fishing a decent amount being out in colorado for school and was just wondering what patterns work in new jersey and what rivers are producing well fairly close to my area? Any and all help is much appreciated as i have never targeted trout in jersey.

![]() Nj fish & wildlife website is a good start. You'll find everything you need to get started there. There's also a no-sponsor fly shop up in Hunterdon county you can call for fly fishing insight.

Sorry, but if you want productive trout fishing you would ideally drive out of Essex County to northwestern NJ. In northeastern NJ, you can try the Pequannock River in Passaic County, the Ramapo River in Bergen County and the Rockaway River in Morris County. http://njfishandwildlife.net/accesscnty.htm |

![]() Welcome. They are also Trout-stocked waters in Essex County. They may not be as picturesque as some of the Sussex/Passaic waters, but still plenty of fish and good shoreline access to some bigger fish. I am an Essex County resident myself and usually hit my local Trout-stocked ponds to get my Trout fix.

![]() I've had the best luck over the years with Wooly Buggers (mostly black, but olive works) and Gold Ribbed Hare's Ears.
I've also done OK with Muddler Minnows, Grey Ghost streamers and terrestrials, though it may be a bit late in the year for the latter. |

![]() i don't think it is, i just got blown up by something huge the other day using a jerk/stick bait and in the hold over lakes the 6 inch flies work until ice.
