Default Big Jamaica Canyon Report

Canyon Tuna Report 9-30
We had another very good trip to the canyon.
We started out looking for tuna in the area NW of the canyon, that was good the week before but, did not find them.

Once in the canyon we started fishing for mahi-mahi.
While we were mahi fishing Rob Finkle boated a 30lb wahoo.
We caught mahi up to 16lbs before we set up for tuna.

After we anchored it not take long to catch the first longfin.
Shortly after that there was a big eye blitz, and they were big.
Most of the fish were too tough to handle and we lost more than usual.
The fish were much higher in the water column than they have been.
We saw a number od 200lb plus fish swimming in the slick.

After the big eye blitz there was a lull in the action before we started to pick at mixed size yellowfin and longfin.
The action continued all night with one lull of about an hour after a battle with a large hammerhead shark.

Some notable catches were:
Russ Masciotti from New Rochelle NY with a 180lb big eye, his limit of yellowfin, and a longfin.
Rob Finkle from Sparta NJ caught a 30lb wahoo, his limit of yellowfin, 2 longfin, and fought and released a large hammerhead shark.
Pedro DeCosta from Yonkers NY caught his limit of yellowfin and 1 longfin.
Charlie Valscatto from Brooklyn NY caught his limit of yellowfin.
Chuck Solan from Silverton NJ landed a 150lb big eye and 2 yellowfin.
Chris Karbownik from Toms River NJ boated the fish of the day, a 230lb big eye.

We landed just over 50 tuna, (three of them big eyes), 1 swordfish, 1 wahoo, and 54 mahi-mahi.

It looks good for upcoming trips.
More tuna are moving into the canyon every day.
The big Jamaica is scheduled to sail on 31hr trips at 7AM every Tuesday and Thursday.
21hr overnight trips sail 5PM every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
