Default Trout Streams Look Great

The trout streams looked great today. They were higher than two weeks ago and there was little or no ice on them. If opening day were today, the conditions would have been terrific. The streams I visited were clear and cold. The lakes and ponds still have a way to go. Parking along the roads is getting better and the designated parking areas have been plowed. The countrysides and mountainsides are still snow covered but thawing nicely. If you have an itch to get out and wet a line, do it tomorrow (Friday) before the rain. With rain predicted for Saturday and the season closing on Sunday, tomorrow looks like the best bet. The rivers are sure to rise with more precipitation and runoff. Anything you catch will definitely be a bonus.

I agree I have been keeping an eye on my favorite spots and they are looking better with each day. On a side note the stocked streams and ponds are closed as of Monday.

You're correct about the closing. I should have added the word " night" at midnight. In any case, today is the day to go. There are other brooks and streams that will remain open, but check the regs.

Getting to/from the streams is the issue now. Still lots of snowpack north of 78 and west of 287. The ravine stream banks still have well over a foot of snow and ice on them. The hemlock-lined, steep ravine streams are still mostly ice-locked. Snowpack under the hemlocks is not bad since they kept the snow off the ground but away from them its almost dangerous.

Lakes and ponds will open sooner than you think especially those with feeder streams. The more feeders the better(like Spruce which has 5 or 6). Also south facing edges will melt the ice quickly. Wind helps too on the larger lakes. Once the edges melt, its like a ice cube in a drink: it doesn't last long. That said, most years the ice is gone by mid March. Cold nights are still ahead so it may take until April to get that first bass.
