Default Tough going on the Passaic

We fished the Fairfield/Montville area of the Passaic on Sat. and not any sign of a Pike for us. The water is really low. I'm hoping that's the reason for the lack of fish on the last few trips. We did manage a few nice Perch that hit lures that were almost as big as they were . Still fun fishing that part of the river. Hopefully we get some nice rain so we could fish it again before the years out.

We should've switched to smaller lures for an hour or so. The Perch sure seemed hungry. Next time.

Sounds like you guys might of fished a similar stretch that I hit last Monday. After a couple hours of working I had a nice looking pike come out of sunken tree and clamp down on a husky jerk. I went to set the hook and ripped it right out its mouth and that was the only fish I saw all day and went home with the skunk. Good job finding some hungry perch!

I have had much better luck with the LOW water conditions. The deep slow water now is holding most of the pike and I find that the approach is critical. I sneak into the spot with the kayak and the first cast is key to avoid the leaves. I am sure that some spots need more water, but I will take the low clear water every time!

I kind of thought that the Kayak fisherman does have the stealth like advantage over us in a boat with trolling motor. But wasn't sure if the low water spooks the fish and stops them from coming up to the lure? But then you can look at it another way and say less water would keep the fish concentrated in the deeper areas.

Thanks Eskimo, not bad for my second Pike ever. I caught my first one the week prior in The Pompton River. Pike dreams all winter no doubt.
