Nice Job bro... but I hope you and your buddy are using the proper line and/or leaders when specifically targeting Pike because if so your buddy should of not been bitten off....
Im not trying to preach but if anyone is gonna specifically target Pike in the Passaic then you need at least 30lb braid and/or 15-20 lb mono/fluoro w/ leaders..... We have great Pike fishery with alot of big beasts and I dont want to see dead Pike with lures stuck in their mouths... |

All things considered, we had only one bite off all day and that was a pretty large specimen. Were we not using the right gear? That's a judgement call. I think that fish wouldve easily bit thru 20 lb fluoro leader. And no, none of us were using braided line and/or leaders. Were we luckier than most to not have more bite offs? Probably, but that wasnt the case this past Saturday. I'll certainly take your input into consideration, although I cant see myself re-outfitting my arsenal with equipment that can handle heavier terminal gear in the near future. I'd also be more concerned with the people that are actually taking these fish as opposed to one swimming around with a piece of temp jewelry in its maw. I'll start with leaders and go from there. Catch em up! |

Nice job man, the Passaic is never a let down! I would def recommend a leader though, bc you never know when that monster is gonna bite! Nice fish, keep the reports coming.

Just earlier today I caught a monster Pike (approx 36-38". 9-10lb) and it swallowed the lure and line was in the teeth and did not break... I was using 30lb power pro.. this stuff is amazing.... I was going for smallies otherwise I would of had a leader... but the power pro braid does the job... |

Way to go Jigman !!!!!! Congrats on a banner day for sure. You hit the river with perfect conditions for pike on your first try.......but......it's not like that every time. With the heavy rain expected for tomorrow, the river can become unfishable for a few days or up to a week. But that doesn't matter, you were there when it was good and you nailed them.
As far as line...leader...wire... I use 17 lb. mono with a swivel rated for 25 lbs. attached direct to a spinner bait. With over 300 pike caught this year from the kayak in the Passaic, I only lost one fish with a spinner bait in it's mouth, and that fish launched out of the kayak during a picture and the line got tangled on the metal camera mount on my kayak (which I replaced so it never happens again). What ever line and leader you use.........sh%t will happen sooner or later and one will break off. It's all a part of fishing. We do whatever we can to have the right gear, but Mr. Murphy always has his way. Congrats again !!!!! Danny V |
