![]() Capt. Bob told us he had reports of tuna 15 mls north of the Hudson where the squid boats were--that's our destination. A bit longer ride out and maybe some looking. So, we left the "squan" inlet with maybe long period 6"-1' swells on 3" wind waves. Found the boats right a way and after the start whistle, I'm hooked up in a minute, Shorts is in a second later, then one at the bow, two in the stern. First yellowfin in, about 35#. Why the hell is my fish giving such trouble. Finally, down 50' in crustal clear blue, we see a much bigger yellow. Up and in the tank--60# class tuna. A couple of dropped fish, but from then on, multiple hook-ups with few dropped. When the bite died, we would move back behind the squiders and the fun would start again. Wednesday was beautiful in all aspects, even early evening, then weather started to change, as NOAA had forecast. I know of only one bait being squidded but probably there were more.
Guys worked well together, like a team, always a pleasure and the mates worked their butts off--as usual, on tangles and fish. 90+% of tuna took 2 gaffs. Sharks were a bit of a problem, at least 2 incoming tuna were attacked, bitten, 1 just a head left on the hook. Don't know the water temps, forgot to ask in all the excitement. Only a few squid seen and don't think any were jigged and boated. Butters, sardines and thawed squid all caught. You know me and my Asian Market bait, although my first and third tuna was on a butter, second was on a Round Scad, one shark took a Dorumuk(Sea of Japan), other shark was on an Eastern Atlantic Sardine (Portugal). T'was so cool seeing tuna chasing bait, chum, following reeled bait looking at it, then turning away, Skippies charging through the slick. OK..tuna totals: 82 big tuna, 6 smaller for 88. Needed two more to limit out... Very reminiscent of the '90's. Throw in a couple saved Skippes. Pool fish was 86.6# (ME) down to the high 60's. There is a digital scale on board. Kudos to the entire Gambler crew for their hard work, abilities and happy attitudes. Special Kudos to our Captain, going that extra to get us fish. Can't wait for next week. ![]() ![]()
