This weekend my Fiancé and I were watching her parents house in Hunterdon where we grew up, so I decided to do some bassin! I got out 3 times, each for a short time, but each was successful!
Saturday morning after sleeping in some, we went to a local spot to walk her parents dog. I brought a rod along as there are a number of ponds there, and it’s a new rod and I hadn’t caught a fish with it yet. It’s a St. Croix mojo bass, medium fast action 7’1” which I still have one of my dads old penn reels on. We got there and I picked a pond and started casting a senko around. Nothing. Moved on to another pond, switched up lures, nothing. Came back to the first pond I had tried and tied the senko back on, whacky rigged, and caught a little dinker.
My fiancé came back over with the dog, signaling it was time to go, but said take a few more casts. I cast under a tree and got absolutely crushed, but missed the hook set. I popped the senko up to the top and saw a big swirl, waited a split second and set the hook hard. Out of the reeds and overhanging trees came a mean lookin bass with a huge head. He was big, definitely 18 inches or better, and heavy too, but I got no official measurement. My fiancé snapped a photo, and back she went.
Maybe a new PB? Would have been for sure if it was more filled out, but it was pretty skinny and beat up. Called it a day there with a huge smile on my face.
Sunday I found myself with a free hour in the afternoon, and filled it with some more bassin. I went to a pond I have fished many times before to see if I could wrangle up some more. I got 3 small ones on a senko, and 2 slightly larger ones on a white curly tail on a jig head. My hour was up and i was happy!
Today after work I went back to the same spot from the first day to find different conditions. The rain Sunday had murked up the water and the wind had blown a lot more debris in them as well, but I was still able to pull 2 small bass out of the depths! I can’t remember the last weekend I caught this many largemouth!
Awesome time on the water this weekend. The new rod performs great and I am very happy with the purchase. Despite most of the fish being small, that big one made everything worth it. I love the thrill of the hunt! Hope everyone is staying healthy and safe. Tight lines!
