The plastics are everywhere and because they are so light in weight and can float, they become a real nuisance. The shopping carts and tires are deliberate contributions to the pollution. The plastics and styrofoam and cigarette filters are from secondary and sometimes unintentional pollution. Even so, there's too much, The Green Brook flows along Route 22 and near many shopping and commercial areas which just keep adding a steady stream of pollutants into the waterway through storm drains and wind-blown deposits. And where does all of this "stuff" eventually wind up? Yep! The Raritan.

The next time your driving to work or to go shopping or wherever, look at the sides of the highway. Look at the stretch of Route 22 where it goes past Weequaihic Park Lake or anywhere along the divider out to 287 or any of the off ramps on any highway. The litter, and especially the "silt" is unforgivable! The highway crews treat the roads with salt and sand and never come back to clean it up. How many inmates are in our prisons getting "three hots and a cot"? Give them a job cleaning the roads. Now, there's a resource we should be using!
