john novak longfin bonanza 9/14/13 capt's jimmy gahm and dave bender took john novak of west caldwell and friends out for an overnighter on sunday sept 14th,2013. within 15 minutes of trolling we had a barrage of longfins coming tight on 7, and the guys did a great job landing all 7 fish. shortly thereafter we got a single, and from then on it was total mayhem. for the next three hours we got clobbered by the longfins, capt jimmy actually drove away from them looking for some yellowfins but we still wound up catching the longfin. we set up for the night hoping for a sword and some yellowfins, but it was a very long night without a bite until false light when 2 rods went off..yup.. more longfin. we cleaned up and headed for the barn in an angry ocean with a pile of tuna on ice. the guys were fantastic to fish with, and i'm sure after this epic trip, we'll see em again next year. Posted by jenny_lee at 03:39 Monday, September 9. 2013 doug witham slammer trip 13 tuna/4 swords/white marlin capt's kevin gerrity and dave bender took doug witham of montvale,nj , son dustin of st. louis, bob and mike of canton,oh and chris of philly on an overnighter sept 6th, 2013. within 15 minutes of putting out our trolling spread we came tight on 5 longfins and boated all 5 . we worked the area for the next three hours and wound up catching a total of 8 longfins and a huge white marlin which was released unharmed. we did not have a touch for the next four hours, but as we were about to set up for the night a rod went off and we boated another longfin. we had action most of the night catching four swordfish to 100lbs keeping three. at 3am i was talking with doug and he told me perhaps he was getting too old for the canyon fishing, perhaps he should just come along and supervise, well at 4am a tuna rod goes off and it's just us in the pit. doug proceeds to angle a very large yellowfin and after a good battle, a beautiful sickle fin 75lb yellowfin is on the deck. i told doug, i guess you can still fish out here. shortly thereafter we had another bite on the bait and i dropped down a shimano butterfly jig and came tight on another quality yellowfin. the action was short lived but it was awesome to see a chunk bite with quality fish. we trolled saturday morning in slow conditons and finally just before leaving we got a whistle fish..another longfin. we left with 10 longfins, 3 large yellowfins, 3 swordfish, and a white marlin release. without a doubt a fantastic trip with good people. Posted by jenny_lee at 03:25 Thursday, September 5. 2013 gary merrit/joe germinario/dave williams/doug karkosza/bob malarkey capt's kevin gerrity and dave bender took an open boat trip with doug/bob/gary/dave and joe out for a canyon trip on sept 3rd, 2013. we picked the longfins tuesday afternoon and had seven fish by about 5pm. we crossed over to the east side looking for the bigeye bite, and at 530 the bridge rod goes off, but not excactly what we had expected...wahoooooooooooo! a gorgeous 70 plus pound wahoo that doug landed. wow! we then trolled into the dark with nothing to show for it, so we set up on the chunk. as in the past this season, we didn't expect much, but hoped for the best. it's never a lack of effort or enthusiasm. we had a bite on the shark rod at 1am and kevin jumped out of the rack and was like a kid at a candy store. after a nice battle by bob we had a 140lb swordfish in the boat, and the guys were pumped. not shortly thereafter we had a bite on the sword rod and we released another smaller version. about 3am we got another shark rod screamer and gary fought this fish, which truthfully kicked his ##%%, after about 20 minutes we had a 125lb swordfish in the box. we got on the troll very early looking for the bigeye bite in a west wind which we knew would be hell to pay on the way home. we trolled till about 9am and took a 5.5 hour ride home in a nasty ocean. all in all the guys had a great time as did kevin and i. 7 longfins/1 wahoo/ 3 swordfish Posted by jenny_lee at 04:20 john sell trip 8/29/13
