Default Deep water fish release?

At the end of every year I do an offshore seabass trip, fishing ~200' water. Invariably, I always see a few shorts come up, get tossed over, and see them either make it back or, usually, die (barotrauma, seagull, etc.). Any thoughts or ideas here?

I did some searching on the net and found this:

The goal of my post is to self-educate and see if there is anything I can do to help our beautiful fishes.
