Reel Class Monday 8/4 Mixed Bag -- Ling, Cod, Flounder, Triggerfish & Mahi!
Ran offshore early this morning in the fog and a little leftover heave from the weekend with a full crew of eager anglers.
First drop was 23 miles E of our inlet and we had some nice quick action with mixed sized ling. The bite was steady but we had to readjust a few times after the pout started chewing. I was also lucky enough to pluck a nice 23" cod off this piece.
Our next drop just inshore of this spot in 230' was a better bite with mostly ling coming up as well as a flounder..
At that point we were nearby some pots so we shifted gears and tried for mahi. First pot, we went 2-2, but it took us awhile to find another pot with fish on it. We were able to go 4-6 on mahi on light spinning rods - all mahi were 22-25". Joe was also able to "free net" a nice triggerfish swimming around a pot.
Our final bottom drop was inshore in 120' and we loaded up on even more ling here. At this point of the day we had a nice south wind to keep us on the hook and we pounded the ling for an hour until it was time to go home.
For the day we boated ~150 ling, 1 flounder, 3 cod, 1 trigger, and 4 mahi. The majority of the ling were "mediums" and we did have an even mix of hot dogs and jumbos. Great day - we were able to get Jim n Mike their first mahi ever, and Eric also boated his first 2 cod ever.
