Default Braid and roller rods?

I don't have any roller tip rods and was wondering if anyone here has any experience with that combo? I see that some manufacturers have come up with new rollers designed for the braids, (narrow tolerances). I have been offered some of the older style roller rods, to be used for tuna chunking (braid with 100' mono top shot) and bottom grouper fishing (braid with 20' wind on leader). Should I avoid the roller rods? In the past I have, thinking "only one more thing that can go wrong".
