Round Valley night fishing 6/13/15:
Got to the Valley around 8:30pm with Wilson. Backed down the dirt ramp to launch and I got stuck in the soft sand full of ruts. My little 2 wheel drive truck was just spinning one tire and digging deeper, damn !! Next think I know a whole gaggle of men come walking down the ramp to my truck, they had been hanging in the lot with their kayaks. Immediately the 6 or 7 of them line up behind my truck and said "let's go !" One good push and I was free and clear, whew !! I think they were either Polish or Eastern Europeans, few words were spoken, I thanked them many times.
On the hook past the North tower on the West facing mountain slope in about 45 FOW by 9pm, just in time to get set up and watch the sun set. Put my bright underwater light down and waited. There were a few boats around, not many, and by 10pm the whole lake was very quiet except for and occasional light South breeze from time to time.
Clouds of very tiny bait fish started to amass around the underwater light. Then a few larger fish came into the light to feed on the tiny baitfish. Since fishing was slow we tried to catch one of these fish that was hanging just below the light feeding on the baitfish, nothing doing. Couldn't even hook one of those fish. Strange thing was these fish looked like GIANT CRAPPIE I'm 99% sure that's what they were.
Anyway the hours passed with just a few Rock Bass and 1 Yellow Perch, no trout. I have seen photos of some absolutely beautiful Rainbow Trout come from the Valley lately so I just had to give it a try.
There seemed to be almost a strange current that night as it was pushing or lines to one side of the boat, even at double anchor. Pulled the hook a little after midnight and headed for the barn. Made sure to use a different part of the dirt ramp and got the boat on the trailer and up to the parking lot no problem.
Fished night crawlers and Velveeta cheese. Looked like the quite a few people camping, nice night for that. I have to go back and check my log books, this type of fishing is usually very good in July, I may be a little early.
