Hudson Reports July 1 & 11
Took my son and friends on our annual 4th of July Exploratory Overnighter on July1. Fishing was slow and the weather was tolerable but not nice. We had two tuna bites trolling, the first came tight with a 50 lb yellowfin which was landed and the second pulled the hook. There was no action at night and we landed some mahi in the morning.
On July 11 took Steve Pieloch and friends on his batchelor party overnighter and we had more action with fantastic weather. On the afternoon troll a skirted ballyhoo was engulfed by a wahoo and during the fight a ballyhoo hanging from the short rigger was grabbed by another wahoo which didn't come tight but shredded the lure and line. The wahoo gaffed weighed 90lb and measured 70 inches.
Shortly after setting up for the night a chunking rod went off and we fought a yellowfin with steroids that went berserk spending more time on the surface than down deep. When landed it weighed 55 lbs and was stuffed to the gills with our chunks and small squid. Of course we thought were going to have a night to remember----- but that was our last bite for the night.
On the morning troll the way back bird was swatted several times and came tight with a white marlin that was released. Shortly there after a flatline rod starts screaming and dumping line but came slack after the first run. Exciting trip with great weather and a great crew of newbies except Steve who has fished the canyons before and he had a blast.
