2 Days on the lower South Branch, 5-31, 6-1:
Floated the lower South Branch Saturday. It was nice of Wilson to run shuttle for me. 1st cast by Rockafellows dam and I was already onto a nice smallmouth. From there on out it was a rainbow trout bonanza ! Despite the raging head wind and all the stuff falling off the trees I managed to bang rainbow trout from where I put to just about where I took out at the confluence of the North Branch, I lost count in the end. The rainbows were sitting in the fast runs. It was tough to fish the deeper pools, many over my head because the minute I stopped paddling I was getting blown around in circles. Lots of activity on the water, saw many other kayakers and ran into the Mohawk Canoe and Kayak Club. Can't help to think that maybe some day soon American Shad will be up in this river. Took me a grueling 7 hours to float, mostly because of the stiff head wind.
