Default Successful 2 Day Offshore Cod Adventure.

Went on a double overnighter Cod trip out of Montauk.

I drove out early and fished the Miss Montauk. Fishing was on the slow side for keepers. I got a bunch of shorts and rays but no keepers. 2 other buddies each got one keeper apiece. They invited me to partake with them at Wok and roll, where they expertly cooked up the catch for us for dinner.

We left at 7 PM on Sunday night and took a 12 hour steam.

Insane cod bite all morning until about 1 PM and then it turned into a steady pick. I started with bait, which produced a bunch of nice 10lb class fish. I switched to a hammered diamond jig with a single hook and jelly teasers and continued to bring up nice fish. My biggest was about 15lbs. Reefsquater from this board and I combined for about 35 keepers, plus another 6 or 7 from my dad. He kept dropping fish after he hooked them but there plenty in the box so it was no big deal.

At one point I put my jigging rod in the holder to help my dad dehook a fish. When I took out my rod out of the holder I felt fish on the line. I deadsticked 2 keeper Cod on the jigging setup!

A bunch of 20 lbers caught and the pool fish was a 30# Cod. There were also some large White Hake caught. No keeper Pollack but I did catch a short and saw a few other shorts around the boat.

It was hot as blazes on the water and we fished until sundown. Mates cleaned fish until about 1 am as we steamed back towards Montauk. We anchored up on some open bottom until daylight so the crew could get some much deserved rest and the area was full of life. The area around the boat was teeming with squid and small bait fish. I was beat but one of the guys fished for squid and landed 50+ squid.

We worked our way back to Montauk and hit a number of spots. The fishing around Coxes Ledge and Block was a lot slower for me and my group. We got 2 keepers on Day 2. We were fishing smaller pieces and with the drift and the size of the boat (140') the bow had a lot better action, but the trip was already a success for me and I didn't really care if I got any more fish. Dogfish were a nuisance on the second day. Sculpin and Bergalls picked at the bait on all the stops.

I also met AndrewOTB from this board, as well as BlackfishDoug's brother Dennis. Both are great guys.

I got home around 9:30 last night and have a lot to do when I get home from work tonight. I will try to post some pictures.
