Default Are Treble Hooks Allowed for Freshwater?

I am somewhat new to freshwater fishing, unless you count that bluegill I caught when I was 8, and a buddy of mine took me out catfishing last night in Bound Brook. We got on the subject of treble hooks and he thought they were illegal in freshwater bait fishing. I am not a fan of treble hooks with bait because in my experience the survival rate of released fish drops drastically either because of a foul hooked fish or my inability to remove them in a timely manner(just my inexperience with those hooks).
I know they are allowed on plugs and hard lures but any guidelines on what the laws are for treble hooks in freshwater?

P.S. The fishing was none stop for 3 hours until the chicken livers ran out. A 5 minute drive from my house and fun light tackle fishing might be my newest obsession.
