5/18 Delaware Float
Took a guided float trip from Long Eddy to Calicoon with my dad yesterday. We fished from 7:00 to about 4:30. Between the two of us we caught two walleye about 17", one shad about 20", a few browns to 16", several rainbows to 18", and numerous smallmouths to 14", with most being in the 8-10" range. Water was at summer levels already and super clear. With the overcast skies the trout weren't quite as spooky as they could have been. Gold spinners were the hot lure, it did not mater what make; Blue Fox, PMs, Mepps, and Thomas all seemed to work equally well. Most of the fish were in swift water. In fact, we caught most of the smallies from water where you would normally find rainbows.
The rainbows were vicious! Most of them were real jumpers, and we lost several on the jumps when they shook the spinner out. Aside from all the rainbows we missed, I also missed a couple of nice browns and a good smallie in the 2.5 to 3 pound range. Shad were everywhere in packs of 1-2 dozen, but getting them to bite was not in the cards. This morning my dad and I hit the Sunoco pool on the Beaver Kill for about an hour, and he landed a fat rainbow on a black PM. But then the rain really picked up, and we were both still sore from yesterday, so we decided to just head home. Pics and video to follow, stay tuned!
