![]() Gambler was out yesterday on our exotics trip. On these trips, we target mahi, bonito, little tunny, jacks and other pelagics.
The ocean was a bit too sporty to head for the pots offshore, so we went about 20 miles to the ESE and fished an under-sea ridge. We anchored up just before sunrise. Within 15 minutes, a fish ran with a baited spearing and we landed a bonito. The first hour was fast fishing on small to medium bonitos and tunnys. Once the sun came up, the fish became a little line shy but the jig-bite turned on. Anything that looked like a sandeel worked well, as long as the operator fished it right. A few times, the bons and albs would back off for a few minutes but then would start to chew again. It was very lifey. Besides bonito and tunnys (albs), we saw small blues, mackerel, fluke, sea bass, porgies and sea robins. Must be a lot of baitfish holding there. We will be fishing entirely offshore this month, weather permitting. Most of the offshore trips have been booked but there are still some openings in November, where we will run one 24 per week. Last year, Gambler did well at the canyons in November.
