Default Megan Beth 7/23 Elks report

Fished PP Elks tourney today. Dave Daly booked the boat with team Blind Squirrel, George, Harry, Rich ,Glen and Larry. Fished hard all day in sticky stuff . Wound up with 19 Keepers . Weighed in two . 5.8 and 6 lb. not big enough. Nice day on water with plenty of action all day . Lots of laughs with fun crew.

I had 2 personal bests today: I never lost so many jigs and Gulps. When not re-rigging fishing was solid. Thanks Capt Dan for another enjoyable tourney. Congrats to Cool hand Fluke Al who placed 4th with 8.3 lb fluke. Winner was 10.6. Good to see all the NJF'ers at the BBQ. Always a great day with great peeps and day-long laughs, even when at the expense of the guy who's snagged again

Back with the usual inmates and mad shout out to Head Trustees Dave and Larry for doing all of the legwork and putting the charter together every year.Henry for bringing the bait , jerked chicken and awesome shirts, Glen and Richie for well just being them and showing up - The Megan Beth , Captain Dan and the original saltiest dog of the sea supermate Russ - your my boy Blue - BTW The Megan Beth is a beautiful fast 38ft Henriques , it is one sweet comfortable ride you cant beat with A/C

Game plan was to start out south and make our way north but that all changed with the conditions, water temps and so much great intel shared by others as always its a tourney and everyone tells the truth -

The morning was a perfect West wind and fluke drift but the water was just to cold, reading high 50's coming out of the inlet and low 60's when we first started fishin and fished between 20 and 60 ft of water. It was a great fluke drift throughout the day one of the best of the year but too bad that South wind from the night before cooled the water down overnight. I jigged all day starting out with a 2 oz. favorite glow/white spro and went to 4oz by the end of the day when the wind picked up and the current started ripping. We picked keepers all day on a mix between dragging bait and jigging. We threw everything we had at em, one drift it was green gulp, then pink shine , 6" swimming mullets to strip baits , salted mackerel , peanut bunker and spearing. The fish were very non-committal, you couldn't just set the hook you had to let em chew , really let em chew and they were just hanging on, it was very frustrating waiting them out and letting them commit. The craziest thing was Dave had a strip bait on and started reeling in and the fish (a good one approx. 25 inches) lets go about 10 ft before the boat but keeps following the bait all the way to the surface, gets on top of the water and just sits there and stares at Dave and gives him the fin. He screams like a chipmunk getting stuck in a wood chipper for the net , fish still there flipping him off , Dan grabs the net and as soon as he puts it in the water ba-bye Mary Martha Focker.

The only constant was strip bait with spearing, the many quality shorts from 17-17.9999 and and Larry losing rigs/spro's/anything that hit the water.
The poor bastard must have pissed off the Fishy gods because literally he must of fished for about 30 minutes all day and the rest was spent re-tying rigs.Russ the mate basically just stayed with Larry like he owed him money and didnt leave his side. I have a new respect for Larry and we just killed him all day long and it got to a point were some of us just stopped , some of us - . There is a new reef being built out there now started and fully funded by Larry and he limited out today on Rock fish. They do fight hard though - - We have all been there buddy

Glen was the hot hand crushing the fish all day (It happens - ) and the rest of us just picked . Once again Dave impressed me actually catching fish. We ended the day with 19 keepers and our 2 biggest fish were 5.8 and 6 and Dave and I caught them but we didnt mark em so in my humble opinion I caught the biggest fish, thanks Dave. I wound up with 2 keepers and to many shorts to count.

Nice to see the usual suspects at the picinic - Big Mike and his crew plus my boy- The self proclaimed Whacky Qwacky,Monger Crew and shout out to Cool Hand Fluke for getting in the money and the winner of the tourney

Until next year

Be Well Be Safe and Good Luck

Fish On

Larry my friend, you provided a valuable service, everyone was so busy busting you onions about being snagged, AGAIN , that nobody had time to bust me about my short to keeper ratio . . .AGAIN !
Great day with my fellow Squirrles and a great boat too, thanks Capt Dan and Russ......
Better luck next year and congrats to the winners.

Great Trip with the Gang again. Capt Dan and Russ top notch as usual. Boat is a sweet platform with all the comforts required for tournament and every type of fishing. You will not be disappointed chartering the Megan Beth!

Larry, you still fared well bringing in a few keepers. Your Keeper to fishing time ratio was excellent. Imagine if you had been in more than an hour! I included some pictures to make you feel better. You look good wearing Georges Fish

Always great fishing with Henry, George, Richie and Glenn (nice work there )

Capt Dan and George summed it up very well so not much more to report. Great fishing with all these guys and Henry was literally SPOT on with where to fish. New shirts were cool in every sense and the right length for those of us that suffer from (well you know) !

That Fluke flippin me off on top was crazy, never saw a fluke that size come up like that after a bait. I came unbuttoned after many drag pulls and 80% there so just reeled in only to turn around again to see her on top looking for the rest of her meal. We froze for a second and by the time we got the net back out we only got a shot at her tail as she slowly went down. Too funny. At least it wasn't a money fish !

Great catching up with Freddy Gamboa at the Dock, Capt Jerry (Monger) at the picnic (call you soon on September charter) and sharing a table with Larry, George Als Mako Steve, Mike Sharkyispy and the usual suspects. Still weird and sad after all this time to not see LAB and his dogs at the picnic!

Congrats to all the winners. Great tourney and look forward to the next one.

Not much else to add, but I did get the numbers for the new reef. Larry was a champ as his stones were busted all day. Never saw someone as frustrated, even his Hannakah trimmed jig was eaten quickly by those pesty rock piles. About 35 seconds.

Always a pleasure to fish with this group, good fishermen and can really do some damage if given the chance.

Found some keepers on every spot but not the right one, this kept us on the prowl. Dan and Russ took care of us like we wanted, left us along to fish, but always there when needed.

Thanks again for a great day and until next year, Larry please restock.
