Default Tough morning on Mercer Lake

I met up with a couple of friends and their boat for a morning of fishing at Mercer Lake. I and my friend had never fished it before, and my other friend hadn't been there in about six years, so needless to say we were not sure what would be the best way to tackle this lake. We were on the water at about 7:00 and headed up into the creek channel, chucking a variety of baits. Five hours later, we only had one fish between us after circling about 3/4 of the lake. We were off the water by 12:00 when the wind got too heavy.

Ya I was on that lake Tuesday. I didn't have much luck either. Wind kicked my ass. Was chucking musky lures around for while but had to keep dodging the row teams so I switched to bass fishing the banks and only came up with one small bass.

Fished this spot only once with the same luck. We managed a few dinks and this is where I realized that having only one battery was a big mistake. Ran out of juice nearly at the farthest point possible with a strong wind hitting us head on. After a lot of paddling, cursing, and frustration we made it to shore and pulled the boat to the landing. NO repeat for me on this lake and I always carry a second battery!

I live right down the road from this lake, and I used to fish it often about 25 years ago when it was still filling after being dammed. At that time, it was still just a wide stream, but it was a really terrific place for super large pickerel...but not so much now.

Last time I was there there was an Asian gentleman sitting in a beach chair on the bank near the Picnic Pavilion. He was fishing with several salt-water sized rods in sand spikes stuck in the bank. He was fishing with his homemade corn meal dough balls. On a stringer, he had a few medium sized carp (5-8 pounds) and was complaining about catching none larger. He said he also caught several big Channel Cats, which he didn't want and returned to the water.
