Default Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Menko...

...can you spot the winning Senko?

Had two small windows of time to squeeze in a little fishing yesterday. Hit two little community lakes.

The first lake: arrived around noon. Sun beating down. Water in that lake is quite clear.
Second lake: arrived just past sundown heading towards last light. Water in that one is a little more greenish with a bit less visibility.

Decided to use the quick stops to throw a little Senko de Mayo party... Basically tossed almost every version of Senko worm that I have in the arsenal at a variety of weedbeds, blowdowns and visible structure. I mean I threw the entire bag of Skittles at 'em. Every color under the sun. Watermelon, green, pumpkin, cinnamon, red, smoke, black, gooseberry. Flakes, no flakes. Traditional and those skinny little ones. 3", 4" and 5". Like I said, I threw the whole salad bar out there. Even threw that Senko crawly thingie a few times.

In the hour or two of total time, I caught three largemouth. Caught one at the first lake in a bit of open water with some underground structure (pictured - though the angle is deceiving). She was actually about a foot long but felt and looked like she had just eaten about four D batteries. Heavy fish, that one. Caught the other two at the second lake in a very shallow weedbed. Both were dinks in the 8-10" range.

So, which Senkos worked at two different lakes, in two different types of terrain at two different times of day? Well, here's the thing... All three hit on the same color: plain ol' black. In fact, all three hit on the same worm: the 5" Pro-Senko (AKA the skinny little one). Got nary a bite on any of the others. Interesting because I couldn't get a sniff with that color or that type when I really started working Senko's for the first time last year (around mid-season). Greens and cinnamons were cash money in warmer weather.

Will have to throw a few more black ones out there in the coming weeks and see if this was a one-timer or a learning. Stay tuned...

Mike

p.s. caught all three with the plastic fished weightless. The first was whacky rigged because I was really just dropping it in next to structure and like how whacky falls. The other two were Texas rigged because I was working through dense weeds and find that they grab less vegetation.

Very interesting stuff. The fact that they all hit that one worm might have more to do with the worm's action than its color. All the rest of the worms were fat, but the black one was skinny, which means it probably had action more like a finesse worm. You might want to try picking up that same type of worm in more colors and see what else works.

As for me, the only two colors of senkos that I carry with me are green pumpkin and watermelon pepper, and they haven't let me down yet. K.I.S.S.
