If you want to practice conservation and keep less then your legal limit great and that’s totally up to you. You want to take as many allowed, although I might not, thats your choice not mine. Fact is it’s nice to have choices.

Other fact is we as recreational Fishermen have made a lot of sacrifices over the years to rebuild fisheries. If there are enough around we should enjoy the resource and to some that’s catch and release and to others it’s keeping some fish for the table. To each his own!!

Unfortunately i think a lot of people kill just to kill to have the look at me dock shot. Keeping multiple 30-50lb bass to post a picture on social media to impress their friends with a “beat on them today, you shoulda been there!” Caption only to have them sit in the back of the freezer for 3 years and finally get thrown out once they eat one 10 ounce piece and realize this 22 yr old fish tastes like crap and you’d have been more than fine taking one 30” fish for the table, eaten it with your family in one night and been done with it.

It's a personal choice. I always release big tog and fluke. But you have to think of future fishing. Sure after seeing how commercial guys rape the ocean your figure what the hell might as well keep everything but does anyone need to keep more then one big breeder. As for stripers I think there is a macho thing going on for some guys.

I only keep one or two Bass a year. I keep one for myself for Tacos and such and maybe one other if a family member asks for some fresh fish. I've had my share of 8-10 pound fluke. Early in the season I will keep a larger one but after that, Give me the 18-24 inchers. Sea Bass is another thing. I will keep all I can get. We just love em. Tuna, Everyone I can keep goes in the box.

Not going to disagree with you since to each his own and I too hate to see fish wasted. However, if you believe the mortality rates, catch and release fisherman account for more dead fish then people who keep them.... Take a look at the chart below and see for yourself. So what are we supposed to do, not fish for them at all??

there are regulations in place and if it is a legal catch , then you can do what you want

Yet folks still need to give their opinions.

Between 4 of us last Saturday fishing we kept 3 fish but caught over a dozen I cleaned them and split the fish up 4 ways and there was plenty of striper meat I'll be out tonight and regardless of what I catch if anything I will release the fish

Gerry, I’m curious to know if there is the same type of release mortality chart for other species ? Redfish for example, they were fished (commercially and recreationally) pretty hard in most southern states to the point near collapse until strict regulations and a slot limits were implemented. Now the redfish is back stronger than ever yet it very much a catch & release fishery.
