Boarding is done by the order you booked your spot.
As they call everyone off you bring a on rod and put it in a holder and a sleeping bag on a bunk |

Or as soon as the schedule comes out You may start out in your spot, but you NEVER stay there during the trip and it really doesn't matter. Sometimes you can't get in without getting picked up by a moving tuna--I just wait 'cause you'll most likely have to re-rig again in, especially in a "cluster-f#@k" tangle...just my 2 cents.....
