Default New Toy! Couple Questions.........

Got a late Christmas gift yesterday!! Talked to a buddy of mine and he had a gas motor he was tryin to get rid of and offered it to me. Awesome! I'm now the proud owner of a Mercury Force 5hp motor!!

This is my first gas motor so I was wondering a couple things. How long will a full tank last compared to a fully charged trolling motor? How much gas will it hold. Don't think I could bring both motors plus extra gas due to the weight restriction on my j boat so it would have to be one or the other.

Lookin forward to checkin out some new, bigger water this year, here's a pic of the motor, seems to be in pretty good shape........

If its a top tank your good for a day of heavy use. If its external you're good for weeks. Bring gas to be safe. My Nissan 6hp 4 stroke uses almost no gas at all. I actually want a small external tank to safe space in my boat.

Thanks! After lookin it over it looks like external. Gonna have to see what size tanks I could use, what prices look like, and what would fit best in my boat.

6 gallon is standard. I'd love to find a 3 gallon but don't think they are made. I ran up and down gwl into belchers creek and used less than half gallon.

I googled it and actually found a YouTube vid where the guys running it off a 3 gal tank. Not sure how old the vid is, or how readily available they are, but they exist, lol........

Good luck with the outboard. Should not be hard to find a 3 gallon tank. Cabelas has them among others.

1. Build yourself a engine stand out of two by fours. Motors are not meant to be stored laaying down.
2. Change lower end oil and use a good quality oil such as royal purple.
3. The prop has a small shear type pin holding it on. Change it and keep an extra on hand as well as a spare cotter pin or nut and washer that is holding it on.
4. Check all seals for leaks and change accordingly.
5. Fresh plug and fuel lines. Add in line fuel filter.
6. Run motor with water wash down attached.
7. Fog and re run.
8. Mount and have fun.
I would go 5 gallon tannk or a three with a spare fuel tank on board.
Have a small tool bag with you. Plug, wrenches, pliers, prop pin, cotter pin, wrenches, ect.
These motors usually get aprox 1.5 - 3 hours of run time per gallon.
Good luck.

I have the same exact engine, I really really hate to be a deby downer but I would hate to see you go through the same thing i go through with mine. sell it man and get a yami, merc, honda....anything but that. its an amazing little engine when its running, but your problems are gonna start WHEN it starts breaking down. its realitivley easy to fix but since they dont make force anymore, IF you can find parts for it, they are insanley expensive. I just recently bought an impeller for it after countless hours of searching for $90... just as a comparison, that is a 10 dollar part for my 8 hp yami. I know getting a new engine is exciting and what not and you dont want to hear it, but sell it and get something else, you will do yourself a huge favor.

If you don't end up selling it and start having problems with it, just ask me. I know that engine like the back of my hand. Good luck!
