is motor big enough?

Just got a call from a dealer who has a MCkee craft freedom 22 footer for sale. The hull is a 2006 and the Motor they just put on it is a brand new yamaha 200 hp. My question is do you guys think the motor is big enough for the boat. From what i have been seeing the boat is closer to the 3,000 pound range.

I seriously doubt you have enough power to run at 60 knots.

If a slower 25-35 k boat is what you need you should be happy with a single 200hp

General rule of thumb is you want to be between 75% - 100% of the rated horsepower of the hull... Each hull has a placard on it that tells you the max horsepower rating.

I would think 200 horsepower would be plenty for a 22 McKee

It'll run fast enough with the 200 HP , maybe not a speed demon but often sea conditions dictate how fast u can run anyway ! Probably cruise low 20 Knt range!
The pluses for bigger OB is u can cruise faster @ lower RPM's but overall no issue with 200 HP that boat weight is not the only factor but hull design plays a role .
Test run the boat if possible this will give u a real feel for how it handles !

Boat size alone is not enough to get a decent read on speed. A CC, bowrider is very light. While a cuddy cabin/cabin cruisers/ WA/ RIB's and pontoon boats will be faster or slower. Add into the hull shape is another factor.

The deeper the V(Deadrise) the more drag. Deep Vee ( over 20 degr) will be generally slower than Std. Vee bottom.

So not all 22 footers are the same.

Additionally is smaller boats where Aluminum rules it is nearly always faster than the same size boat in much heavier fiberglass.

Even a wider beam will make it slower.

A 150 gallons of fuel will add almost a 1000 pounds of weight. My old 25' Grady carried 223 gallons of fuel which is close to 3/4 ton of fuel.

In this case he mentioned shy of 3000 pounds. That's a pretty heavy 22 footer.

yea i have been trying to take all of this info into account. The boat is a 22 ft McKee craft freedom 22. I believe he said its either a 2005 or 2006. 22 degree dead rise, 8 ft 6 inch beam deep v hull. Just about all the info I find says its a 3000 pound dry weight. I am not trying to break any speed records but like you said 3000 pounds seems kind of heavy. I am relatively new to boats this size. Never had anything bigger than 18 footers. Its really going to suck towing this thing around until I can afford a slip or a marina that will let me keep it on land.

It's not heavy as they go. In the beefy range.

Add fuel apprx 6.3 pounds per gallon. A 500-600 lb motor. Tools, fishing junk and people that is a 5000- 5500 pound on the water.

Plus the deep vee design.


It will ride nice is seas. Deep V and heavier boats are much nicer in the 3-5 footer crowd you will eventually run thu.

You will like it. It's not crazy fast but respectable. Flared bow design knocks down and away sea too. Not sure if your model is built that way.
