Whiting
Oops. Did I forget to write "Florida" whiting? The surf whiting bite has been on here in northeastern Florida. The recent spell of summer-like temperatures has apparently put them on the feed. These silvery cousins of the northern kingfish can be caught right in the troughs behind the shore break waves with hi-lo rigs baited with shrimp, or clam, or sand fleas. We've been catching them along with some pompano on a regular basis. The beaches here are very flat and reaching the trough is only possible on a falling tide. Despite the turbid conditions, the fish are able to find the baits and put up a respectable fight on light tackle.
If you are on vacation in and around the Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra Beach, St. Augustine area, and you are done playing golf, try casting a line off the beach for a little while. By the way, the temperature is supposed to get up to 90 by Wednesday. No waders are necessary. The water is warm enough to get your feet wet without even a shudder. |

Re: Whiting
Ponte Vedra near Sawgrass. The beaches have little or no public access but once you're on the sand there is lots and lots of room to roam. There is absolutely no fishing pressure anywhere except for the spots with public parking. Unfortunately there are miles and miles between any public access points. Forget parking. Think about trying to fish between the Highlands Bridge and Sea Bright during the summer.; or Deal and Elberon, or the south end of Bay Head and northern Mantoloking. That isn't even close to the non access here.
