Default FISH STIX - 361# Mako! 6/23/16

Every year around this week I run a fun shark trip for my mates and friends who are always there to work hard and help out down at the dock. This year only Darren and Hunter could make the trip with me.

6/23/16 My 31st birthday, is the day we shoved off for a toothy critter. Late start, and got our slick going and lines in at 8:30am. Let the boring "fun" trip begin. Constant complaining "im tired", "shouldn't have drank that much last night", "why are we out here" kind of crap. LOL.

11:14am a gigantic mark comes under the boat right in the slick. (Simrad Chirp photo below). So we thought here we go. Nothing, never showed himself, nothing.

1:45pm time to chum heavy, Hail Mary style. 2pm f&$k it lets get to dock and not waste the whole day. Dumped the bags of chum, and reached for the rods and the drag starts going on the Avet Pro Ex 30/2, not the Avet Quad T-RX's lol. I actually got on the rod for a bit until I saw it and said holy shit it's a white shark! Turned his head and said holy shit it's a gigantic mako, we are gonna lose this fu$&3!!!. Gave the rod to Hunter so I can Fly gaff him and Darren was on the wheel and had the shotgun ready.

Hit em with the flyer and it bounced right off him! Not gonna lie, that pissed him off. Again, somehow we didn't lose him. Another shot with flyer and barely got him with it and shatters the end of the pole. 4 shots in the head and 2 tail ropes and we have a HUGE mako tail roped!

I don't have a transom door, cuz I normally don't need it. Tried numerous times but just couldn't get this shark in the boat. After breaking the aftco flyer and straightening 2 aftco gaffs, we tied him up mid ship and headed home.

Back to the dock on the certified scale weighing in at 361lbs and 103.5", WITH A COMPLETELY EMPTY STOMACH!!

What a day. A day the 3 of us will NEVER forgot. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to get the right bite and with our good teamwork and quality tackle and gear, we landed this huge mako shark. It's been 2 days and I still think it's a dream. A catch of a lifetime. Thanks to Hunter and Darren for sharing this special birthday shark trip with me. And thanks to all my friends at the dock givin us a hand with it all!

Gear/Tackle Used:

Avet Reels Pro EX 30/2
Crowder Rods
TN-TACKLE Shark Rigs

The pics tell the rest.....

Kris....great catch! Big makos are strong and tough to boat. Late start and fishing at 8:30 you probably weren't too far offshore. And coupled with the green water in your chum slick pic I would guess vicinity of MH. Don't want to know just an assumption. Surprised seeing a mako especially one of that size in green water, they usually like the deep blue gulf stream looking water. Makes your catch even more impressive. Everything has to go right to land a fish of that size, especially a mako. Great job both you and your crew. Helluva a birthday for sure, tough one to beat!
