![]() I hope to God this is one fishery where we learn from our past mistakes. Like most who witnessed it, I never thought we would ever see a post like this again of both ling and whiting being caught in good numbers or in the case of whiting in any numbers. Give these fish a few more years to spawn and protect them from the small mash netters and there's no reason this body of fish can't increase in size and be a sustainable fishery once again. It will be a few more years before they migrate in numbers to the east and if we leave them alone, they will populate the Mud Hole and inside areas the way they did in the 60's and 70's. It won't be long after that you will see giant blue fins in the hole again with some degree of consistency.
I hope the powers to be get this one right as managing this stock of fish will be a win win for everyone. Spring / Fall party and charter boats, commercial guys, tuna fisherman, recreational boaters and even shore anglers will have a chance to harvest these fish. For those of you who never experienced it, ling and whiting fishing was a seasonal traditional fishery and it was unbelievable when they disappeared. As I said, I hope the fish we're starting to see reappear is just the beginning of a true comeback for these two species. It would be a remarkable recovery and a true example of what can happen when fish stocks are managed responsibly and not exploited by commercial interests whether domestic or foreign. And man are they a great eating fish! Thanks for the post, man does it bring back memories! Dakota Last edited by dakota560; 10-12-2014 at 09:14 PM.. |
